COVID 19 UPDATE - June 1, 2020
In planning Sail Camp 2020, we are taking guidance from local authorities. We will open Sail Camp on June 15.
The safety of your child and our staff are of top priority, but in the end each family has the responsibility of deciding to attend or not.
The number of participants in Sail Camp each week is relatively small (16 students) compared to other camps. In most cases, each camper has their own boat. To the best of our ability, we have enacted social distancing protocols. While this is no guarantee, it does lessen exposure.
Registration is open: We believe we will sell out this year but we can put you on our standby list in case there is a cancellation. Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to be added to the standby list if Sail Camp is full, or if the week you want is no longer available.
What could be better than a week of Learn to SAIL CAMP, improving your sailing skills, and making new friends? Sailing is a perfect activity for anyone that enjoys water sports and outdoor recreation. Sailing can be exciting or relaxing. Regardless of age, ability or limitations, sailing has something for everyone.
NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION: Sail Camp is provided by Privateer Sailing Education Foundation (PSEF). A non-profit, 501C3 corporation that is located on the Privateer Yacht Club property, Hixson, Tennessee. We appreciate your ideas, support, and donations.
CURRICULUM: Students are taught to sail in PSEF owned boats ranging in size from 8 to 13 feet. The staff consists of Instructors certified by the United States Sailing Authority. The main emphasis of the camp is fun and safety. Campers will learn: to speak the language of sailing, how to rig their own boat, use the wind to sail in any direction, to right the boat when it tips over, then put away the boat at day’s end. While on shore campers meet new friends while being taught: care of their boat, rules of safe boating, how to tie useful knots, do some swimming, paddling, hiking and much more. Lunch and snacks are provided. Learning to sail their own boat across the lake and safely returning to shore gives your child increased self-esteem and confidence in their abilities. Most campers return for several weekly camps year after year.
REQUIREMENTS: Students must be: 8 to 17 years old, mature, able to learn, follow directions and be open to new exciting water sports. Students are required to: Pass a swim test, bring a comfortable Coast Guard approved life jacket and “close toed” sneakers or water shoes.
SCHEDULE: Camp sessions are one week long (Monday through Friday) and run from 8:45 am to 4 pm.

CONTINUE SAILING AFTER SAIL CAMP
Many Sail Camp participants would like to continue developing their Sailing skills. Here is how:
Join PYC’s Youth Sailing Race Team! Privateer Yacht Club has a Youth Sailing Race Team that meets every Tuesday evening for 3 hours of practice, racing, and social activity during the weeks of Sail Camp. These Tuesday practices will end on July 21st and will begin again on fall weekends when there are Regattas to attend (dates will be given out as soon as they are known). These practices will end during the winter and start back in the spring.
Another option your sailor has is to become a Junior member of Privateer Yacht Club. The cost is less than $40 annually.

To gain more knowledge, Race Team members also have the opportunity to crew with Yacht Club members during races held on Wednesday evenings in the summer, plus Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
