The Privateer Sailing Education Foundation (PSEF, a Non-Profit) was established to provide sailing education at Privateer Yacht Club. Teaching Adults to learn to sail has always been a part of the PYC mission statement. PSEF is a separate organization that functions symbiotically with PYC.  It organizes and delivers sailing education for adults and children, as well as the physically challenged.

PSEF offers spring, summer, and fall classes to take advantage of the most favorable sailing weather in the Chattanooga area. Class size is limited, so please register early.

The Adult Learn to Sail class is designed for adults who have never sailed before, or who have had limited experience. The course teaches the art of sailing, a sport you can enjoy participating in for your entire life. It includes the following:

Safety

Rigging and care of a sailboat

Nautical terminology

Rules of the road

Leaving the dock correctly

Sailing to windward, leeward, and on a reach

Returning to the dock

Reading the wind, including direction and velocity

Basic knot-tying

The course is taught on Lake Chickamauga using the facilities of Privateer Yacht Club, Located in Hixson TN. We use boats owned by the foundation such as the Flying Scot (a 19-foot boat for 2-3 people), Fusion (13 feet, for 1-2 people), and perhaps a keel boat.

Instructors are trained & certified by US Sailing, the national sailing authority.

In the event of cancellation due to weather or Privateer Yacht Club conflicts, we will attempt to re-schedule.

Please indicate your desired session (Saturday or Sunday) when you register. You will receive a textbook prior to your first class.
