PRIVATEER YOUTH SAIL CAMP

2023 REGISTRATION IS OPEN

What could be better than a week of Learn to SAIL CAMP, learning or improving your sailing skills, and making new friends?  Sailing is a perfect activity for anyone who enjoys water sports and outdoor recreation. Sailing can be exciting or relaxing.  Regardless of age, ability or limitations, sailing has something for everyone.

NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION: Sail Camp is provided by Privateer Sailing Education Foundation (PSEF). A non-profit, 501c3 corporation located on the Privateer Yacht Club property, Hixson, Tennessee. We appreciate your ideas, support, and donations.

CURRICULUM: Students are taught to sail in PSEF owned boats ranging in size from 8 to 13 feet. The staff consists of Instructors certified by the United States Sailing Authority. The main emphasis of the camp is fun and safety. Campers will learn to speak the language of sailing, how to rig their own boat, use the wind to sail in any direction, how to right the boat when it tips over, then put away the boat at day’s end. While on shore, campers meet new friends while being taught care of their boat, rules of safe boating, how to tie useful knots, they will do some swimming, paddling, hiking and much more. Snacks are provided, but each camper should bring their own lunch.

Learning to sail their own boat across the lake and safely returning to shore gives your child increased self-esteem and confidence in their abilities. Many campers return year after year.

REQUIREMENTS:  Campers must be:  8 to 17 years old, mature, able to learn, follow directions, and be open to new exciting water sports. Students are required to pass a swim test and wear appropriate boating clothing including “close toed” sneakers or water shoes. If your child does not have a comfortable Coast Guard approved life jacket, a loaner is available but most campers prefer to bring their own.

See our PARENTS HANDBOOK for frequently asked questions and answers.

2023 SCHEDULE: Camp sessions are one week long (Monday through Friday) and run from 8:45 am to 4 pm.

Note: Class size is limited.  Weeks are filled as registrations are received. When a week becomes full you may still register and be placed on a waiting list. Cancellations often occur and you will be notified as they become available. If your plans change and you need to switch weeks, we will do so if space is available.

COST: $375 per session per camper.  Discount for multiple children from the same family -$50/student.   Enrollment is not guaranteed until payment is received.

PAYMENT & CANCELLATION POLICY: Payment is due at the time of registration. Our web host requires a small payment fee which will be added at checkout. In case of cancellation, the payment fee cannot be refunded but the full camp fee will be refunded until 14 days before the first day of camp. For cancellations made 2-13 days before camp, a $50 cancellation fee will be applied. No refunds for cancellations made less than 2 days before your week of camp begins. NOTE: When registering for the waitlist, payment will not be required until an opening is available for your child.

WAITLIST NOTES: Sail Camp has two fleets of boats - we have 12 Optimists for smaller campers, & 10 Fusions for larger campers. Once either fleet reaches capacity for a particular week, all additional registrations for that week are put onto the waitlist. That means we might still have room for your camper if he/she is the right size for whichever fleet is not yet full that week. If your camper's plans are flexible, feel free to register for more than one waitlist week - that will improve your chances of getting a space and you will not be billed until a space is available for you.

CONTINUE SAILING AFTER SAIL CAMP
Many Sail Campers would like to continue to develop their sailing skills.  Here Is how:

Join the Privateer Race team!  After camp ends, we will invite any interested campers to join our Racing Team. The team practices weekends throughout the year, weather permitting. They also attend and host many competitions in the South East. Practices and races are conducted in sailboats used in  intercollegiate racing and the Olympics. More information about the Racing Team can be found here.

PYC offers a junior membership for sailors under the age of 25. By joining the club as a junior member, there are several benefits including the use of our training fleet. For more information please see our Membership Page.
